Guild of American Luthiers 1984

Greensboro, North Carolina

Impressions by Dwight Newton

In 1984 the Guild of American Luthiers held their convention at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.

The convention hall had many exhibitors of instruments makers as well as commercial suppliers of parts, materials and services.

One evening there was a party in the home of our host at which several participants played their instruments or just jammed. Here are Vermont luthiers Fred Carlson and Susan Norris. Susan is playing one of her fabulous 10-string Suzalyne freeform violins.

An Irish bouzouki by James Jones of Bedford, Virginia.

"Dulcina" model hammer dulcimer by Sam Rizetta.

A graphite prototype knock-down 12-string guitar. The resonant chamber is filled with an inflated weather balloon inside a K-Mart bag.
